I'm doing this project, and I need to know.

Yes, but not as rough as American Elm. In the winter, at least where I live, the leaves on small trees of beech will tend to turn light yellow and stay on the tree long after other species leaves have fallen off.

They're a bit rougher than maples, but not too bad. The bark is REALLY smooth...and beautiful! Yes, the leaves stay golden almost all winter, like the ones in Tolkien's elven forest of "Lothlorien", in LOTR. Cool.
