If you are handy with tools and know a little about plumbing and electric, it's not a difficult task. If not, you should probably have the work done by someone who is capable.
Be careful.

Don't know what you mean by broke. Maybe it can be repaired. There should be a label on the water heater. Check when it was installed. Water heaters have manufacturer's warranties, some up to 10 years .If it is still under warranty you may only have to pay for labor to replace it Don't recommend changing it yourself with no electrical or plumbing experience. Good luck.

NOPE IT IS NOT! Find the water shutoff valve (s). if you don't see one for the hot and one for the cold at the hot water tank. Then, shut the main water off. Turn the breaker off at the panel box. disconnect the wires at the hot water tank. Open the drain valve at the bottom of the tank and let it empty. disconnect the water lines from the tank. Trash the old one install the new one, reversing your steps. writing down what you did will be helpful as you hook it back up. If you can get an exact sized unit for replacement, it will be easier to reattach everything.

Heck, get your boyfriend and some of his buddies together. Put them to work, then reward them with a BBQ and a case of beer. Works every time. PS: No beer until the heater is installed.

Getting the same size heater is important so that you do not have to change any of the mechanical venting above the unit.

You would need to have plumbing and electrical knowledge to install yourself. Also depending on the size they are usually heavy.
