I recently purchased a new dryer. The electrical plug on the new dryer is a three prong dryer. The problem is that I have a four prong dryer electrical hook up. I currently have a old dryer that has the four prong electrical cord. Do you think it would be ok to replace the three prong electrical cord with the old four prong electrical cord? Thanks for your time.

Ensure the 3 terminal cord is for 240VAC. Sometimes it is meant for 120V. If this is the case you can not swap cords.

I will assume both dryers operate at 240VAC.

Make sure you understand the difference between the three and four wire outlets. Most likely the 3 terminal dryer uses two live lines and ground. The 4 terminal dryer also needed the neutral line. This is often for either the motor or the light bulb to operate properly at 120V.

If you use the 4 terminal cord on the 3 terminal dryer you will not be using the neutral conductor. It should be capped or terminated properly to not touch anything else inside the dryer. Make sure the current rating on the cord is adequate. Ensure the live lines and ground are connected to the correct places on the new dryer. Do not use the cord if it is not in good condition. Throw it away and replace if there is any evidence of cracks, fraying, etc.

If it will attach it self to the new hair dryer go for it but ONLY ONLY if the old plug is not torn or frayed in any places.

That would be dangerous !

No problem... will save you money not having to buy a new cord.
