He was an innovator of the 12-tone technique, and his music is quite difficult to approach. If you have some musical background and understand a bit of music theory, it is more easily appreciated.

For part of his life he was an exponent of the 12-note system, also called 'serialism'. The 2 other main composers in this style were Webern and Berg, who were his pupils.
To answer your question, his main works include Verklarte Nacht, Gurrelieder, various piano pieces, Violin Concerto, Ode to Napoleon, Piano Concerto, and a string trio.
He also wrote books on harmony, counterpoint and composition. He was also a painter, professing allegiance to his friend Kandinsky, the founder of the Expressionistic school in painting.
