Jamestown (now in Virginia) was settled to steal property b4 Spain had a chance to settle it, and to explore the resources of the land (especially GOLD).
Plymouth (now in Massachusetts) was settled as a religious colony for Puritans (religious fanatics) who wanted to live separate from the infulence of the Church of England.
Roanoke (now in North Carolina) was settled for the same reasons as Jamestown.

All three expeditions were financed by privately held stock companies founded with the blessings of the Crown.

location, location, and location. they settled there because they were thought to be good locations for colonies. they are all close to water, and other needed resources.
