What will happen is that during the colposcopy, if they find irregularities on your cervix, they will go ahead and take samples (called biopsies) from various anomalous sites and send them to a lab to be analyzed. The whole thing should take less than 1/2 hour and you'll be out the door.

Depending on the biopsy results, you will be informed of your choices and counseled on treatment options. Surgery should not be undertaken until they know WHAT they're treating, and how extensive the irregularities are.

As for the pain meds, you probably should NOT take anything before hand, for 2 reasons.
First, the biopsy procedure is not that painful (about as bad as period cramps). Also, there's no reason to make another person take a day off work to drive you there - it's really no more involved than a Pap smear. Secondly, it might make you bleed when you might otherwise not.

colposcopy, they will not be able to get a microscopic result for the next few days, no no immediate surgries. You can sure take a vicodin an hour earlier if you have them and if someone else is driving and if it is not contraindicated in your case, good luck
