As everyone says, except the guy who got it wrong by saying 6, the answer is x = 5.

You have to understand that in algebraic equations there is always and unknown quantity which you need to find. The example you give is pretty simple but the principle is always the same, how to find the unknown. OK then, let's analyse how you do it.

If 3x = 15 then put it another way. 15 = 3 times 'something' which we call 'x'
If we need to find what one 'x' is then we need to divide the number that represents 3x by 3. So as we know this is 15 then if we divide this number by the the value of x is revealed so

15/5 = 5 so this is the value of x.

Substitute 5 for 'x' and we get

3 x 5 = 15
