Hmmmmm. Since you put this question in the geography section, I would say to threaten to send her to Guam.

You start when she is in 1st or 2nd grade and make it clear that doing her homework is her "job" and it has top priority over all the junk. Do it soon after getting home from school and then there aren't those late nights of whining and/or loss of sleep.

By the time she is 13 she will realize that it's what she needs to do without you having to stand over her with a "whip and chair".

However, if you have just now started trying to get her to do her homework, you are screwed!! ...can't teach an old dog (or young teenager) a new trick!

Remember that you are not her friend. You are supposed to be the parent. She has her own friends. The parent tells her why her homework is important--come up with your own answer--then you tell her what happens if she chooses not to do her homework. Shut off the T.V. for the night. Yes, I said the night. Here's a good one: You cannot use the telephone until after your homework is done. Check her homework. DId she do a good job or a half *** job to get it done. Remember you are the boss.

Throw out the video games, TV's and place access passwords on the computer. Leave these permanent. Your 13 year old needs to understand that schoolwork comes first.

Make it interesting and related to something she understands. Without that, it becomes useless info to study for a test. Watch some related moives to make a visual connection. Find out the same info in a museum. It works.

Have you tried brute force and ignorance? It works for me.

Set a time, she goes to a room with no TV, no MSN, no music until the work is done.

Never provide an excuse if she forgets to do it.
