I have found over the years that the best way is to open up the PC and look for code numbers. Usually the motherboard type is printed in white near the memory slots or the expansion slots. Failing that, the next thing to try is googling the numbers on the chipset. there are usually two (northbridge and southbridge some are called) but they are normally the larger chips soldered directly on the motherboard. Other clues to help you narrow down your search are things like which CPU it uses, is it an AGP, PCI or PCI-x graphics card.
thereis a long number when the BIOS starts up which you can use but you have to hit the pause/Break key during startup to get it.

I have listed a couple of sites which may be of help...

Have you tried......opening the computer case and looking at the motherboard?
Come on, that was too easy.
If you're not sure about motherboard names, here are some common ones: MSI, ASUS, Foxconn, ECS, PC Chips, ASROCK, Gigabyte

Look for the "System Information" application in your Start menu, probably under "System Tools." It will give you your computer model, processor type, BIOS version, etc.

If that's not enough, you need to open your computer and look at the motherboard, or find the documentation that came with your computer.
