The collagen and elastin in the skin (which help it to stretch & move) can only help the skin to stretch so far, and when the limit of the skin is reached, stretch marks occur. Its been said that cocoa butter lotion liberally applied can help prevent them, but I'm living proof that quarts of the stuff didn't help one bit!

It depends on the woman. Some women never get them, some come out looking like zebras when it's all said and done. Personally, mine popped out around the 7th month, when the highest stage of growth for the fetus begins - they can happen any time the skin is stretched quickly, due to weight gain or a growing baby/ies.
The skin stretches and the collagen fibers actually break, causing the tear-like marks. They fade after delivery - turn kind of silvery by the second year post-partum.
You can't make stretch marks go away entirely without the help of a dermatologist (a doctor who specializes in treating skin problems) or plastic surgeon. These doctors may use one of many types of treatments - from actual surgery to techniques such as microdermabrasion and laser treatment - that reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

These marks appear in 50 - 90% of all pregnant women, usually showing up in the later half of pregnancy as bright red lines, sometimes even purplish. While the majority will be on the lower abdomen they can also be found on the thighs, hips, buttocks, breasts and arms of women.

It really depends on several factors such as your skin elasticity, how fast you gain weight, and the hereditary thing in your family women wise like you mom, sister, or grandma. I developed mine in my eighth month and boy was I depressed! Here I went all that time and they showed up at the last minute! If your lucky you just might be one of those very few women that don't get any. Good Luck!

its abvious that the skin streches during pregnancy..
thats why after pregnancy the extra skin remains.. lotions and all that stuff wont help if you want to remove them..
from the moment pregnancy starts till the end, a regular oil massage definately removes the stretch marks.. my mom has 2 sons.. me and my bro.. she's a living proof..

Anytime your body size increases at a dramatic rate, your skin stretches. When it exceeds it's ability to stretch, you get the stretchmarks. Usually they will become obvious between 5 & 6 months.

it depends on the rate of weight gain and how fast the woman's belly is getting, the larger the belly the more stretch marks.

Anytime, or they may not show at all. if you don't gain more then the recommended amount of weight, you have a lesser chance of getting them. Bottom line it really has to do with they type of skin you have.
