Why must you be classified into one?

If you have valid reasoning for your stances on issues and they all fall in one particular category, then I guess I understand. The majority of people, however, have very little reasoning for their beliefs and simply follow what they're told to believe. Then, those labels are turned on them and used as insults by those on the opposite side that are just as unintelligent.

Others are actually intelligent and think about the issues and don't necessarily stick to any party or belief system. I appreciate those kinds of people.

Personally, I hate the democratic and republican parties because I think they accomplish nothing and are only interested in self-preservation. I am economically conservative, but I believe in liberal social issues so I don't fall into any specific category.

What do you think?

Yes I hate it too. I'm a little of all of them. I can't call myself any one party or category at all. But I certainly can see right, wrong, and idiotic ideas on all sides!

I hate how the parties have lowered themselves to campaigning through mud-slinging and act with all the maturity of toddlers on a playground... and because of those attitudes it's impossible to post any questions or comments or speak our minds on ANYTHING without someone being immediately offended.

Even if I disagree with their point of view, I'd respect someone more for thinking for themselves than to blindly follow based merely on party or category.

Partially true, but someone without a belief system is called a moderate, flairing in the wind, testing the currents, seeing what others believe before casting their lot with the majority. Without a strong set of core beliefs you have nothing to measure alternatives by, be they better or worse than your own, thus you fester and wring your hands. You can not change as you are a follower.
You must find it interesting to balance conservative economics with liberal social issues which means fiscal restraint and work hard for your own rewards against spending someone else's money.

To the other poster try this one.
Liberals= we are all in this together = and the government shall set you free
Conservative= every man for himself = self reliance and independence.

I saw a cute bumper sticker today:

Scare a Conservative....Think for Yourself

BTW all these labels meant something entirely different 20 years ago. Thats why so many people don't understand where they stand anymore. Being conservative meant keeping government out of business and private lives. Now it means corporate welfare and legalizing religious stances in schools and intrusion into ones personal and reproductive life. Liberal used to mean support for equal opportunity and the freedom from religious interference in private and reproductive life. Hmmm that could be why we weren't quite so vituperative in those days. Not nice, mind you, but at least we had some civil discourse.

I don't have as much of a problem with the labels as much as how much wieght is put on them.

What's even worse than those who pigeon-hole others is those who pigeon-hole themselves!
"I am a democrat & as a good democrat I MUST support abortion & welfare programs & bash Bush"
"I am a republican & as a good republican I MUST support Bush, th& the war & be opposed to abortion & gay marriage."
THINK FOR YOURSELF PEOPLE!!!

I think the extremists on both sides are destrying our political situation & making it so that the common American doesn't have a good choice once the November election comes up.

If you want to make a difference in our system, we need to all show up for primaries. Currently only the far right show up for the Republican primaries & the far left show up for the Democrat primaries. So the moderates don't stand a chance. If more moderates voted in primaries, we'd have more moderates in the November elections.

I have a problem with political parties and labels. I think when you elect someone to represent the views of the people then their service should reflect that. The idea of voting along party lines is getting out of hand. The fact that the gridlock caused by people acting out like that cripples our country since nothing gets done or even worse something bad that harms us gets done. I think as voters we should keep that in mind during every election or referendum.

No, I don't hate it, unless the labels fit. However, I do hate it when people try to say I'm this ultra-conservative Republican, when I'm really not. Just because I'm not a liberal Democrat doesn't make me a conservative Republican.

You need the labels to have an identity. That's an important value in its own right- individually, with friends, on a mass scale. Like where you grew up or what team you support.

The problem is that there isn't any real debate in the US. Not really. It's just 'gotcha!' politics.
