Its my boyfriends bday this weekend and he loves sushi. I want to take him somewhere nice. I've heard that restaurants like maki maki are corporate so the food isn't that good.

i guess it all depends on what you like and what you consider super expensive. super authentic? super trendy? etc.

maki maki in irvine is horrible. don't go there.

abe (newport beach): trendy and pricey. they have fish that you won't get at most places. depending on your appetite, it could cost you up to $100 per person if you pig-out.

wasa (newport beach & irvine): trendy and moderately priced. they create some great dishes there. probably around $50 per person. if you go to the one in irvine, sit with mike or shane.

kitayama (newport beach): very authentic. don't expect to get any kind of "roll" there. a great place for a birthday because of the authenticity. depending on what you get, it can set you back around $65 a person.

mosun (laguna beach): very trendy with a night club upstairs. food is okay. definitely go for the "scenery". cost per person is around $45 to $50.

tuna town (huntington beach): very trendy (i think it's owned by one of the members of the band korn). they have some great creations there and it will cost around $50 per person.

california beach (newport beach): best bang for the buck. for only $22 per person, it's all you can eat. try to sit with masa and order the "albert special" masa trained me to be a sushi chef and i created that roll for my friends.

Fun Sushi Momo's in Fullerton off Laguna Road. This place has been opened for over 20 years and has never advertised, yet is always filled with loyal customers. Why? Go there and try their Momo Special, Tiger Shrimp Hand Rolls, or Albacore Garlic Boat to start and you will understand. Their food is incredible and is considered by local foodies to be one of the best kept secrets of the OC. Furthermore, they have the VERY best spicy tuna I have EVER eaten, and I am a sushi fanatic that has eaten at literally hundreds of sushi restaurants all over the country.

For sushi, I do like Niko Niko, though it is a chain of about 4 of 5 restaurants. There is one in Costa Mesa and one in La Habra that I know of for sure. The latter one is closer to me. When i go the restaurant is full and clean. - Marie

If you want to go truly authentic Shibucho is the only way to go.
Make reservations ahead of time and ask for the counter seat.

I'm Japanese American and this is the only place I go to in OC.
