You should have been paying into your own unemployment, so you have already worked for it. You will only get what you put in, so if you've only had $40 taken that's all you get. In Ca. for sure your check would be processed through E.D.D. You will also have to go in daily and actively look for work.

You and your employer pay into the fund as do all employers and employees. The money comes from that fund.

every paycheck will show you the unemployment taxes are taken out of your paycheck. so it comes from your paycheck..........
