Tires are the only thing on the car that is so prone to fail they give you an extra one in the trunk. That said puncturing the tread the strongest part of the tire with steel belts should not be plugged, But can be patched from inside. However unseen damage might make that tire separate at high speed. Repairing a HR or higher speed tire is not recommended. VR, XR and ZR tires mostly are directional and should never be patched and if replaced replace in axle pairs (2) front tires or (2) rear tires Of the same brand and tread pattern.

A plug goes completely through the tire if installed correctly. It should last as long as the tire with no problem.

If done properly they should last the life of the tire, some say patching is better.
