Let's say you've won $500,000. A day later, an unknown male contacts you and threatens to kill himself and his entire family (wife & five young children) unless you give him ALL of the money you've won.

What would you do and why?

Would you feel guilty if you decided not to give him the money and he killed his family? How would you feel if everyone blamed you for their deaths?

I can't pay this guy, because if do, it provides an incentive for other would-be extortionists to do the same thing. Pretty soon, every rich person in the world is getting a call from some crack-pot about how he is going to kill his family if you don't pay him a bunch of money. Whether the guy in fact kills his whole family has nothing to do with me; it's his decision. Why would it be my responsiblity to pay him in order to prevent him from killing his family. He has no right to expect that. Finally, if I did pay him, how would I know whether or not he was bluffing.

I would pay him 1 million not to kill his family. Believe me when you open that brief case and he sees all those crisp 100 dollar bills stacked on top of each other he'll agree.

CRACKPOTS abound in this world.... I would simply hang up and let him do what he planned on doing LONG before he ever knew I won anything.

I cannot babysit everyone... I am but one person... someone threatening to do that horrible act is far beyond what my money would do for him / them.

Who says that he wouldn't kill them all anyway and run with the money. Sorry but the lotto jackpot stays with me and he gets reported to the cops for extortion and blackmail and conspiracy to murder.

NO, because if i gave it to him he wins. and i'll never know if he would actually do it. besides, why should i be broke the rest of my life because some guy wants to kill himself. he would kill his family afterwards anyway.

you cannot put a price on life. i would try to help him and his family. try to find him and help him. if i could not, yes, i would give him the money, it would go to charities anyhow.

$500 million is written like this:
$500,000,000

I'd tell him to suck an egg.
