some places do not charge, others you need to register for a special access key code that's good only for 24 hrs.

Some places do charge for WiFi, and some don't charge for WiFi.

What WiFi is, an RF network interface card. If you are going to run this device at home, you need to purchase a WiFi access point, or router. This device will plug into your DSL, or Cable modem, and create your on WiFi hotspot.

Good Luck.

Maybe, some establishment don't charge you.

If you are building up a WiFi infrastructure of course you won't have to pay for using your own.
