Havoline® Automatic Transmission Fluid MERCON®/DEXRON®-III Is now recommended by MB. I've used it in many vehicles with great results. It is easily available at most parts stores and even Walmart. I'd recommend that you drain the old fluid and do a complete fluid replacement. Sometimes different fluids don't play well together. When was the last time the fluid was replaced in the car? You may still have some with 100,000 miles on it! I'll bet an entire fluid change would cost less than a couple of quarts at the MB dealer!

if you have a dipstick in your car you can check it yourself, but most Mercedes Benz models do not come with one unless someone purchased one and installed it for you. Other wise you have to check the transmission fluid with the Mercedes Benz WDs scan tool.
here are the fluid types available for your Benz mainly Dexron III unless its a full electronic trans or all wheel drive but your model isn't either one so dexron III is acceptable.

Here is the procedure for checking your fluid
nspect oil level in automatic transmission, add oil if necessary
Adding transmission oil
Danger:
* Risk of accident. Accidents may result if the vehicle starts off unintentionally with the engine running. Risk of injury as working around the engine during start-up or while running may result in confusions and burns
* Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving.
* Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
* Do not grasp hot or rotating parts.
NOTE: The vehicle must be horizontal
1 Remove locking pin (93a)
NOTE: To do this, shear off the plate of the locking pin with a suitable tool and press down the rest of the pin in the cap.
2 Take off cap (93)
3 Fill with transmission oil
CAUTION: When refilling and after changing the oil, pour in approx. 5 L of transmission oil before starting the engine. Insufficient and excessive quantities of oil result in malfunctions and transmission damage.
4 Start engine and allow to idle in selector lever position" P"
NOTE: When refilling, refill with the rest of the specified oil quantity.
5 Shift through the driving stages several times with the vehicle stationary and the engine idling
NOTE: Operate service brakes at the same time
6 Check transmission oil temperature
NOTE:
* Operate service brakes at the same time. When the transmission is cold, the oil level indicator must be between the "min." and "max." marks, 25 degree C (transmission oil temperature). The exact oil level at 80 degree C (transmission oil temperature) must be between the "min." and "max." markings.
* When using the HHT or STAR DIAGNOSIS, the current transmission oil temperature must be read out in one of the selector lever positions R, D, 4, 3, 2 or 1.
7 Insert oil dipstick as far as the stop and pull out again, read off oil level and repeat if necessary
NOTE: Warm up the transmission, wait at least 2 minutes and check the oil level with the engine running.
CAUTION: If too much transmission oil is added, it is absolutely essential to drain off or extract the surplus. Insufficient and excessive quantities of oil result in malfunctions and transmission damage.
8 Check oil level again
* Correct if necessary
9 Fit cap (93) on oil filler pipe and press in new locking pin (93a) until it clicks into place
10 Check transmission for leaks
CAUTION: In the event of oil loss determine and eliminate cause, otherwise it may result in both malfunctions, transmission damage and serious harm to the environment.
