Because it's too much strain on their fragile little minds to spell a word differently from how it sounds.
The English are brighter, and indeed invented the language!
So the Americans are, in conclusion, stupid.

This question had been asked before, just an hour ago, and the other way around. Are you reacting to that?

Of course the english language evolved from saxon, french and norwegian languages and dialects.

The "-our" ending in many words is actually french (coming from -eur), and somebody around 1830 (Webster?) decided to create an American-only dictionary.

You know the Americans, they think they can change everything in the world, some of them even believe THEY invented the english language (yes, read the answers to the other question I mentioned!!), so when they don't see the historic reason for how their words derrived through the centuries, they simply get rid of some letters.

I have already seen people write "tonite"! Really!

On a political note, I guess education is delibarately made so poorly here, to keep as many people as possible as dumb as possible, because dumb people are so easily told what to do.

Why does it matter? In America it is "Americanized" in the UK it is spelled using the "Kings English"

Why try to make something huge out of something so trivial? Are you really that bored and shallow? Isn't there more important things to worry about than spelling or puncuation, accents, religous beliefs?

Please, get a life ! Stop asking stupid pointless questions.

It started with Webster I beleive, (of dictionary fame) who decided to Americanize language, and make things simpler and sweeter. It originally happened in about the 1800's or so, and it heloed our American culture in general. You really don't need u's in humor or color, that's just what Americans have been used to at least.

Talk to Daniel Webster about it---he is the father of American English.

I think it's just an evolution of language. No one writes like Chaucer or Shakespeare anymore because language changes. We also refer to certain things differently. Just a different culture.
