I asked because I saw this painting where a GOAT was playing the fiddler and it seem like a happy setting. (Marc Chagall's La Mariee) You can see it here: http://www.allposters.com/-sp/La-Mariee-Posters_i127029_.htm

In ancient Jewish tradition, as we find in the Bible, the goat was a symbol of sacrifice. Thus the term "scapegoat." We've all heard the tune about a human and the devil having a fiddling contest; (The Devil Went Down to Georgia). But looking at the Chagall painting, I think the artist may have been depicting sexuality via the horned goat. Mr Goat is indeed fiddling merrily as the groom hovers over his presumably innocent bride, whose virginity is about to be sacrificed.

The goat was used by the Ancient Hebrews in a ritual to have their sins forgiven. They attached to a goat the sins they had committed, and the goat was then slaughtered. This is the origin of the term "scapegoat." In Christianity, Jesus became "the Lamb" whose sacrificial death forgave sins.
