yes I agree whole heartly, plus we should bring back week-end hangings in the park on sundays after church like we used to ,so all the horse thieves will be taught a lesson, watch the crime way drop like a used ballon

I think that although it doesn't seem like a bad idea, it could end in a really bad way. First of all, it's unconstitutional to require someone to carry a firearm, and I serious doubt that the proper legislation could be passed.
Plus, imagine how paranoid every single person would be all the time knowing that everyone around them has a gun.
And, think of all the people who have perhaps fantasized about committing a robbery, but would never go through with it. Well, I think the added temptation of having a gun would certainly not be helpful to them.
Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it would work, but I have strong doubts about that.

Extremeism never works. Taking guns away doesn't work obviously (countries with guns outlawed have higher levels of violence than those that don't--it's proven).
However--your idea, while it sounds good at first, falls apart under scutiny. Every time Joe got mad at Bob there'd be a gun fight---we'd regress back to the days of the Wild West! 'Kill or be killed' would be everyone's motto. People would make rash decisions...shoot first, ask questions later.
Haha it would get especially messy if booze wasn't banned...think about a bunch of drunks with guns--yikes.
So..the best is what we're doing now. By no means do you want to outlaw guns, but it'd be ridiculous to require them. Try to keep them out of the hands of the criminals, and then leave the rest up to our police force.

Would we have a polite society, or an even more overflowing prison population?
A gun in the right hand, but the wrong situation, can lead to disaster.
Look at how many road rage shootings we already have to deal with.

Yeah, when people think of the Old West, they think of politeness.
