It isn't a true story.

The director came up with the idea for the film while standing in the hardware section of a store with a chainsaw display. He loosely based Leatherface's character on real life cannibal and necrophiliac Ed Gein. Ed Gein died back in 1984.

The movie was only based on a shred of truth. There isn't really a Texas Chainsaw Killer sitting in some prison cell somewhere.

No, people usually get this mixed up. This movie was INSPIRED by a true story, not BASED on a true story. Leatherface is fictional, but was created to be based on the real serial killer Ed Gein who killed similarily how Leatherface does, so there was no real killer with a chainsaw in the state of Texas

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was based on the serial killer Ed Guine. It is not a true story, and Leather Face does not exist.

The idea for TTCM was loosely (and I stress "loosely") based on the life of serial killer Ed Gein. The director of the original movie Tobe Hooper recalled stories about Gein growing up and used some of those ideas in his movie.

Most movies that say they are "based on" or "inspired by" a true story are usually far far away from being anywhere close in substance to actual true events that happened. Its just a marketing ploy.

The story may have been true LONG ago but even if it is it wouldn't be nearly as bad as the movies because it's all hollywood trying to make it interesting, they just say the case is still open and he could be alive to scare you, if he's alive he's damn old that's for sure!

It was BASED on a true story. It doesn't mean that it's exactly as they say. It was a long time ago, so I'm sure he is dead by now.
