If you're storing stuff in a damp area or a place that is subject to high humidity (like a typical Mini-Storage), use the plastic containers.
If you're just going to put the stuff in the boxes and take it right back out in a few days, cardboard boxes are fine.
The problem with cardboard boxes is that they are dusty (more of a problem if you have allergies or are storing white clothes or linens, etc.) and they lose their strength and ability to keep their shape over time.
Generally, if you dent a plastic tote, it pops back into shape without losing its strength; a cardboard box is forever weakened by such a dent.
It doesn't seem like a big deal, until you're stacking things.
If you're moving directly into a new residence and aren't going to be storing items in the containers, cardboard boxes are usually pretty easy to collapse and they're both recyclable and biodegradeable!
The real advantage to cardboard boxes, of course, is that you can usually get them for free from general merchandise stores like Target, Wal-Mart, Sams Club, Sears, K-Mart, etc. and groceries that carry bulky items.
In the end, if money isn't that big of an object, you probably want to use some of each.

Boxes are good because you can toss them out when you're all moved in but totes are good because if you decide that somethings you want to keep but not display in your new home then you can always store them safely in the totes. If you store things in boxes they could and most likely will get damaged . The totes are more expensive but they'll last a long time and you can use them and reuse them.

Boxes and garbage bags, put breakables in dresser drawers and don't stack things on them. I would only buy the totes if you will be moving frequently or if you would have a use for them after the move. Even if you got cheap ones you would need quite a few.

The totes are probably more durable and easier to carry, but then what do you do with them? The boxes are lighter, and you can throw them out afterward. It depends on whether you plan to use the totes again.

Boxes - because they can be thrown out or recycled. If you move with totes you will be stuck with 1000 totes that you have to try and store somewhere...That would get ugly.

the totes are sturdier and u can keep them after u move for any thing that u want to keep stored. for the heavier stuff get the ones with wheels. also with the totes u have a lots less risk of anything getting broke.

I would say both.....
Pros;
Boxes: break down and easier to dispose of.
Totes: can be reused.
Cons:
Boxes: are not waterproof, can harbor bugs if you live in an affected area.
Totes: take up space and you have them so you think you NEED to use them... Holding on to more junk!! (I have about 15 of them now!! :-)

I am in the process of moving myself and my hubby and daughter and we found (for the 3rd time) that the Chiquita BANANA Boxes are super excellent. They have lids and handles and are so easy to stack and pack!! We get 20 of those things in a Mistubishi Expo Wagon!!
