Is it just to be a lightning rod for criticism? People on both sides, republican and democrat, have called for his resignation. Military generals as well.

It baffles me.

To get rid of him would be to say Iraq is a disaster. They cant do that. They can not fire him because he has to much dirt on them if they get pinched. When you have lied and your administration is fueled by corruption everyone needs to stick together so no one will rat each other out.

It's up to the President whether Rumsfeld stays or not. As long as he has the trust and confidence of Bush and Bush's supporters, there is no sensible reason why he should surrender to his detractors.

Most of the people calling on him to resign are only doing so for political propaganda value. I see no merit in their claims. Most Republicans and generals support him and trust him. Why give the Democrats' grievances any weight?

It baffles me as well but I think the reason is that if he resigns then Bush & Cheney would have to admit failure and they'd rather have Laura & Barney as their only supporters than to admit the truth. When you have top military personnel talking resignation we'd better be listening...............

Like all appointees, he serves at the pleasure of the president. So unless he really wants to resign or W asks him, he's not going to. W supports him fully.

There are plenty of times when appointees are asked to resign because people don't like them.

I'm being objective here-- I don't support Rummy

I think that it is in the best interest of the Republican party to keep him. He is a distraction and is a good replacement for if anything happens to George.

At the same time one could only hope that he would step down...but that is just a pipe dream.
