Just to expel any doubt on this one, the people that answered that there's a chip in your TV tracking your viewing are not correct. The most trusted source, as some have mentioned is the Neilsen rating system. A demographically varied group of people have their TV viewing habits monitored, and their "patterns" are used, based on laws of averages, to determine the number of viewers. If you listen close when a show or report says how many viewers a show had, you should hear them say the word "estimated". Happy Viewing!

A computer does the tally for how many people watch a TV show, the sky or digibox you have these days sends a signal that "Tells" the TV companies what you are watching, in other words its Big Brother but on a much more global scale in the entertainment industries.

I used to work for BBC radio and we would regularly get our show's "Rating". It's simple, a polling organisation samples peoples viewing habits using telephone polling or a questionaire and extrapolates a figue for the whole population.

Their are companies (like Neilson) that keep track of such things.
Your cable/sat box also keeps track of your habits. The informtion is then sold to whomever wants it.

Nielson contract with customers with "view boxes" and they use that to determine the popularity of shows. It's biased of course but that's what they do.
