Football is part of American culture. Now, whether you support the sport or not is your choice--I have a great distaste for it. I'm not sure what you want to understand--if you wish to understand the rules, then I am sure that there is a site like nfl.com or something that will explain them. If you wish to understand the violence of football, I would suggest reading articles and books on psychology, anthropology, and sports. From Ritual to Record is one book that I would recommend that explains sports and culture; it devotes a chapter to American football. I would liken American football to a ritual in which the dominate male is established by the frenzied violence seen on the field. I believe that it can serve as a metaphorical sense of escape from the constraints of society, which is equivalent to a breakaway in soccer.
I hope this helps.

I learned first by attending High school football games and I started to watch football on T.V all of the time and just find a website explaining the positon of each person (players) what they do what there called and the object of the game. It's really not hard to understand.

1. Go to a game (college or pro) with people that love football.
2. Tailgate before the game.
3. Eat, drink and be merry during the game.
4. Tailgate after the game.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 4.

That's how you'll better understand football :-)

There's actually a "Complete Idiot's Guide to Understanding Football Like a Pro"... seriously. It was an easy read and helped give me more technical understanding of the game. I don't think you can learn to love football from a book, but you can learn to make sense of the game you love to watch.

I would say sit and watch the games with someone who knows the game and have them point out things to you, then over time you will get football on your on.

Firstly, you need to understand that football is played with a round ball and kicked with feet, hence the name. The US play something akin to rugby but, unlike rugby played across Europe and Australasis, they do so with padding and helmets. It's all wrong.

Watch more games with someone who knows everything about the sport. That way, any time you have a question about a call, a play, etc., you can ask.
