If only the so called super powers & war hungry nations realise that it has brought nothing but destruction to humanity, in pursuit of weapons built up.

I truly wish I could explain why but there's no good reason for it.

The real big problem is human nature regardless of whether you're talking about a superpower or a third world country. You and I and everybody else here may be decent people but not everybody is. There are people who will break in to our homes and shoot, torture, or rape us just because they want to. Some people are just wired wrong and get pleasure from other peoples suffering.

If one of those people is intelligent or influential enough, they may gain power over others and use their persuasiveness to manipulate others in to doing things which are just as evil as they would do in person. If that person and his followers are a tribe 10,000 miles away, you don't have much to worry about. If they live a mile away from you and have already attacked the other surrounding tribes, you have a problem which will not go away by having a friendly chat with them. You will have to fight them.

Superpowers aren't the problem most of the time, small rogue states are a problem permanently.

You obviously have a good heart because you don't understand why governments, warlords and tribal leaders continue on a path of insanity.

You said:

"If only the so called super powers & war hungry nations realise that it has brought nothing but destruction to humanity, in pursuit of weapons built up."

They do realise and they don't care. They'd tell you "You have to see the big picture." and "You can't make an omlette without breaking some eggs." and all those other highly offensive phrases said by these anonymous suited people.

On a purely financial basis there is a sick logic to those budgets.
An assault rifle costs more than one students books for 5 years of school education. The only education that keeps you alive when your enemy is getting ready to attack your village is what you learned about loading, cocking and accurately firing your weapon in order to send small pieces of forged lead coated in copper speeding towards another human being and when they hit that person they will go straight through skin, bone and muscle. Those pieces of metal may cripple or kill that person who you call an enemy even though he is nine years old. But he's carrying an AK47 and he's one of a tribe responsible for genocidal attacks in the surrounding area.

I wish I could tell you that it will end and that one day the whole human race will suddenly wise up to global problems and the roles that individuals play in it. Who knows, maybe they will.

The problem isn't just that it's a waste of money. The problem is that it's a waste of money in order to buy weapons which waste life.

I don't think there's been a war worth fighting since World War 2.

The great irony is that the budgets are called defence budgets but if we were honest, they would be called military budgets because they are used for defence and offence.

I can only be honest and tell you you're right to see that it's crazy to waste money on weapons when people are starving and need simple things like clean water. More appaling still is the fact that so many world leaders that spend billions on war are supposed to be religious and believe in religions which teach that it is wrong to kill.

People are greedy and they wiil kill to take from others on a one to one level or an international level. If somebody comes to steal from you and brings a gun just in case you can fight him off, you'll need a gun to fight him off.

Text books would be no help to Israel when Hezbollah attacks them. Text books would be no help for the Iraqi government when America and allies invaded. Text books would be no use to America when Al Qaeda attacks them from within.

The budgets aren't the problem. Nor is religion or culture or national boundaries. The problem is the Human Race and it's will to be dominant and hold the highest status.

Ever heard of the military industrial complex? There's a vested interest in promoting wars and producing more weapons.
There's no profit to be made from education and besides, educated people question authority!

To put it simply: If you don't spend on defense, and your nation is nuked to smithereens as a result, any amount of money spent on education will mean nothing because you'll all be dead.

Prioritize. Education is important, but defense is more important.

nice observation....would love it if you added in "spending on New Orleans Levee's" and "money that could be spent towards lowering health care costs". Good way to be a true American and care about America (ns)!

Have you ever tried to learn C++ while someone is shooting at you with an AK-47?
