As an American who loves football (also known as soccer) I have a few opinions on this matter. First of all like a few mentioned above American Football, Baseball and Basketball are sports deeply rooted in American History and there for these are the games that most families grow up playing. This is changing however. Soccer is now the #1 participation sport in the US more so than American Football, Baseball and Basketball. The reason for this, we are slowly coming to realize the beauty behind this game's simplicity. First of all, all you need is a ball and two goals (if even that). Second of all, it is a game you can begin to play almost from the day you are born. Lastly soccer is becoming the sport of the moral majority. Parents don't want their children playing sports where violence is the name of the game.

The part that is hard however is getting us fat American's to pay attention. We have such short attention spans that our sports have to start and stop other wise we have lost interest. We are not interested in a game with flow or rhythym. We want to set organized plays once every minute and then a replay or two with an idiot announcer over analyzing the whole thing. In addition to this American's have this altered view that somehow athletic means you are 6'8" 275lbs when in reality most people of this size can barely run without falling over.

Maybe we should buy into the idea of globalization before it is too late.

The history of American football is very much part of US culture. In 1820 a game called "balltown" began to be played at the College of New Jersey (now known as Princeton). At that time it was termed as a kicking game. In 1827 Dartmouth College in New Hampshire also developed their own kicking game.

In 1850, England had two varieties of what was called football. One focused more on kicking and the other on running. Today soccer would be the kicking version and rugby the running. In 1861, Boston is said to have found the first American Football team which was a combination of the two.

The foundation of American football evolved in some of our top universities and became deep rooted in American culture.

i don't think of many Europeans do think of it is unusual that individuals do unlike soccer. there is not any doubt that soccer is a interest of skill performed by utilising athletes yet they does not final 5 minuets on an American soccer container. Rugby is a much extra appropriate interest and has specific similarities to American soccer.

Mr. Italian, I would say as a life long resident of the central US, I do not enjoy the game of soccer. It is a wonderful game for my daughters. As far as a high-school to a professional sport, Americans must have constant scoring and action. Watching a 2 - 3 hour game and the final score is 1 - 0 is hard to sit through and enjoy. The planet as a whole loves the game. But us impatient Americans got have lots of scoring that keeps us on the edge of our seats.

Americans have more money to buy equipment for cooler sports than to go around on the streets playing soccer with a sock.

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that we have a lot of other major sports to play and watch here in the states. You have american football, baseball, basketball (although it has become unbearable to watch), hockey etc. It also might have to do with the fact that we watch these games, see someone go down on the field, writhing in pain and two minutes later they are up and running around like nothing happened. Makes the players look like f-a-g-s.

My guess would be because nobody has really taken the time to understand the game. Typically Americans like to see very high scoring games, and for some reason cannot accept ties (draws) in any sport, and so a game that allows 0-0 ties would make no sense to them.

Because we Americans have the shortest attention spans in the world, and we don't appreciate the skill of soccer. We would rather see 300 lb.+ men try to kill each other(myself included when it comes to college football. I could give 2 sh*ts about the NFL)

Because, Americans keep themselves separate from rest of the world in everything, even in sports. That is why they have got their own sports which no one else plays in the world. They have got American Football and Baseball and both of these sports are not very popular in the rest of the world.

Enjoy......
