I wasn't sure, so I asked the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus. They both said mermaids were real, and if you don't believe them, I have the Tooth Fairy's phone number to confirm it.

I believe Mermaids are a myth made up by fisherman to explain the strange noises Dolphins and seals make at sea and also the sightings of their tails.

Actually, mermaids were seen by sailors on the high sea--but it was eventually learned that they were not, in fact, half women half fish but were dolfins giving the illusion of this.

I'm sorry to have to tell you but they're not real. Neither are unicorns or dragons or any of the things referenced in mythology. That doesn't mean that we wouldn't like them to be real, and we can pretend & have wonderful dreams, movies, and books about them though.

Yes. The stories of them go back to ancient times in Ireland and other places. No experienced sailor would mistake a dolphin for anything else.
