What about doing an essay on Restorative Justice?
Restorative justice is a progressive sort of punishment for juvenile offenders. It is both a punishment to the youth and community service, as well as a chance for redemption.
An example would be, sentencing youths to repaint graffiti with murals and store logos. Another would be working part-time at a convenience store that the youths robbed. Another would be volunteering at a Big Brothers & Sisters program for gang-related offenses.
The whole idea of restorative justice is to impose court sanctioned responsibilities on youthful offenders, and give them a chance to rise to the occasion. Growing up in and out of jail only hardens young criminals, while a chance at redemption can be a way to find out what they are capable of, and give them a way to build their own self esteem and worth.
You can find out some statistical info through a search engine on youthful crimes, and rehabillitation as well.
Good luck and have fun with this! If you save your info gathered on this, you could expand on the subject and redo the assignment for other classes. It is still such a controversial and progressive topic, so you will always be finding new info and stats related to it.
