If you are having a standard model tract home built by a large volume builder, you probably won't have any choices as to the number and location of lighting fixtures. You will probably be offered a small selection of actual fixtures from which to choose for your dining room, bathrooms, porch lights, etc.

If you are having a custom home built, you will usually have all kinds of choices. A lot depends on what type of contract you have with your builder on how the selection process works. In any event, it will be to your benefit to pay a visit to a good lighting center as soon as you have a set of house plans. Most good lighting centers have "lighting designers" on their staff. A lighting desinger will work with you in on the placement of lighting and the selection of fixtures. It is essential that you begin to work with them as soon in the building process as possible or you could seriously limit your choices later on or have to pay for expensive rework to accomodate the lighting you want.

There are so many options available today that is is almost criminal not to make use of a good lighting designer for your new custom home.

Good luck with your new home.
