i understand that it's a dogs way of getting to know another dog.....but my dogs have known each other for a LONG time, and they still sniff each other's behinds...i don't get it!

when I was a little kid and asked my grandfather that very question, he told me
many years ago, all the dogs had a big party. Being polite, they all hung their tails at the door. There was a fire, and as they ran from the building each grabbed a tail on the way out. Of course, nobody got their own tail. To this day each dog sniffs the others tail to see if its his.

Most animals rely on scent to know who each other are and well sniffing each other butts are part of it .
