As long as I don't make a habit of leaving early and my projects are all on schedule my boss has no issues with me leaving early or taking a day off in the middle of the work week.

Tell them your lunch must have been bad. Several years ago my husband went to a buger joint for lunch and he got to go home early. He also went to the ER and missed 3 days of work.
