social , I always heard this used about events such as dances - parties.

yes mother there is a Socail event at our school on friday night.

Meetings was used for those formal events. Such as Lodge meetings.

Gathering where used for family reunions.

You may want to just read some books that where published around tha ttime frame. East of Eden - Outsiders - those will get good resources for language and how different classes and races used the words for different meanings.
