If it opens in and to the right (handle on the left side facing it) it is a right handed door. In and to the left with knob on the right, is left handed.

It's based on the side that opens in.

Another way is to look at the hinges. Go to the side that has the hinges facing out and which ever side they are on, is the side of the door. Left side hinges, left hand door.

I can't believe all the bad answers here.
If you are facing the door and it opens towards you, if the knob is on the left side, it is a left hand door.
Another way to think about it is this. Put your back to the hinges. Which way does the door open? To the left, it's a left hand door. To the right, it's a right hand door.

from the inside of the room, if you open the door with the latchset on the right side and it swings toward you, it is a right hand door - if you open the door with the latchset on the left side it is a left hand door.

Thats not a fair question, if you say it's a right handed door when you are facing it what happens when you want to come back through it from the other side? does it change to a left handed door?

To find the handing of a door, put your back against the hinge side of the door. Whatever side the hinges are on is the handing of the door. Your question doesn't contain enough info for a proper response.

My formula is simple:

It's all about Hinge location.

Imagine yourself walking INTO your house from the Front Door. The side the hinges are located is your answer.
** If hinges are on the "left" it is a Left-hand door.
** If hinges are on the "right" it is a Right-hand door.

The applies to every type of door.

Note: The door must always open away from you for this formula to work.
