NICKEL MINES, Pa. - A 32-year-old truck driver took more than a dozen students hostage in a one-room Amish schoolhouse Monday, barred the doors with boards and fatally shot at least six people including himself, authorities said.

The gunman, identified as Charles Carl Roberts, had been in the school about 45 minutes before police got the call, State Police Commissioner Jeffrey B. Miller said. Officers had to break windows to get into the school. By then, three young girls and the gunman were dead, he said.

If 3 girls AND THE GUNMAN were dead...who shot the other 2 victims???? Is it just me or does that sound peculiar to you guys too?

Police said they found the bodies of three girls at the scene, along with the body of the gunman, who had turned the gun on himself. They said several other victims were taken to hospitals -- some with very serious injuries. All had gunshot wounds. The county coroner reported six deaths in all.

I was confused when I read it as well but I think they mean by the time the broke the windows, 3 girls had passed and that the other died later at the hospital. It's the "by then" in refrence to the breaking of the windows that lead me to this conclusion.

It's poor writing for sure but it is breaking news so they may be a bit hurried to get info out.

That is a really tragic story. Maybe the two other died later, or it was a horrible misprint in the newspaper, if it is anything like my little small town newspaper they have daily errors in printing and it really makes you wonder where are the proofreaders.

I think this is an example of poor writing. Also I am not sure anyone know exactly how many were shot. The different sources all have different numbers.

I found it strange too. But they said there were two or three more victims alive but in critical conditions. They might have been thought dead at first.

Maybe the other 2 were shot but not dead yet.
