Well with the ear infection and URI he probably hasn't slept well at night. The sleep is good for him. As for the wheeze, the URI would cause this. Did the MD take a chest x-ray? if not I'd get one to r/o pneumonia. The Zithromax will helpwith the infection. If he gets worse do not hesitate to take him to the Dr. of ER if after doctor's hours.

I wouldn't let him sleep too long. Wake him up and offer him a cold Coke - caffeine help to open up the small capillaries and also the cold will help his throat and chest. My brother had asthma attacks and the first thing the doctor offered was an ice cold Coke. It also helps to break up any mucus in his throat.

I would wake him every 4-5 hours until the wheezing subsides and offer this and maybe hot soup as well. If he doesn't have a productive cough and the wheezing continues into tomorrow, I would contact the doctor again to ask for help with the congestion.

Was he wheezing before he started taking the medication? If not, I'd call the doctor, this could be the start of an allergic reaction. If he was wheezing before because of the URI, then let him rest, he probably needs it.

His body is fighting off an infection so it can take a toll on him physically. Rest and plenty of fluids in addition to his meds is the best thing for him at this point.

Let him sleep. Probably didn't get much sleep last night. Just check on him but don't force him to get up. Rest is the best thing when you are sick.
