It's a geographic area, usually grouped by similar characteristics.

For example, the Pacific Northwest region of the North American continent is generally heavily forested, mountainous, and humid. But it can be better defined by it's political origins. Most of that area used to belong to the Oregon Territory.

The word can be use to discribe alot of things when used properly (large continuos land, water mass ) The Americas, from the tip of Alaska to the tip of SouthAmerica is a region or The state of texas can be look at as a region and island on the other hand would be too small, but if there are many them stretching over a large enough area it can also pass as one.
Politicians sometimes use the word when grouping areas of the world, that may be of a problematic issue,eg;middle east (region known for it's oil and much more)
