Trotsky had in effect already been cut out of the party leadership by the time of Lennin's death. His high level supporters had been reassigned to posts outside the military which precluded him from making an attempt to attempt to take over party leadership (couldn't be done without military support).

Stalin rose to power because he came to control the bureaucracy of both the Party and the Government in the years after the Civil War. It was his appointees that supported him in the power struggle at the time of and after Lenin's death. Hence his ability to suppress Lenin's Testament and to undermine Trotsky, who was seen as a would be Napoleon by many party members. Stalin also appealed to nationalist sentiment with his slogan of Socialism in One Country, while Trotsky's call for permanent revolution did not appeal in a country that was still recovering from WW1 and revolution.

Mailordermaven has got most of the rest right. See: The Revolution Betrayed written in 1936 for Trotsky's perspective.

As an interesting historical footnote read Rosa Luxemburg's critique of Leninism which predicts the rise of a Stalin-type figure.

Lenin wrote a letter to the parliament, saying that Trotsky should be named as his successor, while Stalin should be gotten rid of. Stalin naturally hid this letter from the parliament to protect himself.

Stalin teamed up with Politburo members Kamenev and Zinoviev. They began to slam Trotsky, picking up all minor faults of his and raking up his past. They emphasised clearly on his Menshevik past and how he was but a newcomer to the party.
