in other words not literally depressed but just down or sad. I'm a woman, and I don't do that. If I'm said, I'm sad. If I'm depressed I don't even eat. But I hate it when women claim to be overeaters when they're down. Not everybody overeats.

It is not an excuse, people who overeat because of stress, anxiety, depression whatever the reason don't have the same kind of brain dynamic that other people have. Their brains don't produce chemicals called serotonin and endorphins. So it is harder for them to deal with stress full situations so they tend to overeat. By the way just because you "don't over eat" doesn't mean you are more normal or better than other women who do over eat, it just means you are different.

They're idiots. People express being depressed in different ways. Some women may want the chocolate, or to pig out, but I'm personally not hungry at all when I'm depressed. Other people may want to shop or just lie around watching corny soap operas. Just like some people might throw a hissy-fit (and that be the end of it) when they're angry, while others just avoid what/who made them angry.

Because some women actually do it. I do. When I'm anxious or nervous I eat, I mean I don't start stuffing a bunch of ice cream down my troath but I constantly feel the need to look for something in the kitchen. Its like a nervous tick, when you feel like that I think you just want something to do and most fo the time you don't so I eat. You don't even realize you are doing it most of the time, its like smokers, or people who drink.
My friend stops eating when she's sad. She just sort of forgets.

It's no stereotype, nor is it limited to women. Many people tend to overeat when they deal when they are upset. But it mainly depends on the person, some people tend to overeat, others won't eat at all.

It's an excuse made by people (males as well as females) to cover their insecurities. The mindset: If I'm fat, no one will like me, so I will have a reason to be depressed vs why am I depressed and what can I do to get myself back on track!

When I'm sad or depressed I lose my appetite too. But just like I lose my appetite others over eat. I would say its safe to bet that the people who say they over eat when depressed, actually over eat. And with the obesity problems in this country I would say more people are like that then like us.

its the part of the brain that needs to be trained, yours are but not the others. There is something happening in our brain when we are sad, happy, nervous etc, that makes us to do something eventhough we don't like it. Good for you! you have strong control over something but some people don't that's why they need help to overcome it, instead of critizing them.
