Your local shelter or SPCA, or rescue organization, or a reputable breeder. NO PET STORES!!

The best place to get a pet is through adoption. There are so many unwanted animals out there that need homes that would be the first choice. Try www.petfinder.com and search on the type of animal you want.
If you feel you don't want to go that route, I would go to a reputable breeder. Pet stores sometimes support puppy/bunny mills where animals are bred in awful conditions and taken away from their mothers at too early an age. I've also found that pet stores don't always that much about the animal you are purchasing. If you adopt you'll get information on your pet and care tips.

Really depends on the type of pet you are looking for. If you're looking for something like a cat or dog, try adopting a pet from the local humane society.

This is a big "THANK YOU!" to everyone who said check your local shelter. That is the very best place to get a pet of any kind. So many pets are abandoned every minute of every day, they need us, and they are all wonderful. Go to www.petfinder.com to find your new baby, but please make sure you research your species/breed prior to making any decisions. Good luck!

Definitely the humane society or rescue organization. If you are looking for a pure-bred, there is probably a rescue that handles the breed you are looking for - about 25% of adoption dogs are pure-breds.

From a reputable breeder. That way they can answer all your questions properly and advise you on the best way to care for your animal. Making the sale won't be their only requirement
