A gallon is merely a measure of VOLUME, not WEIGHT. All liquids will weigh different amounts at the same volume. This is due to different liquids having different specific gravities. For example, oil will float on water, therefore it is lighter than water. From that you can say that a gallon of oil will weigh less than a gallon of water. A gallon of pure water weighs in at about 8 pounds.

"A pint's a pound the world around" is a familiar quote to some. So since there are eight pints in a gallon, a gallon must be about 8 pounds.
