You're comparing apples to oranges. The music today is written for people today. The music from the 60's had a different audience intended.

Our memories of older music are skewed by the fact the rubbish did not survive - we are left with what was good, or popular or enduring and the dross fades away. So every decade viewed from later on looks like a golden age compared to today.

One thing that can be said for the 60's was the amount of innovation - something we can never achieve today except in very small amounts. At the start of the 60's we had three chord rock and roll, at the end we had Ska, Reggae, Heavy Rock, Concept Albums, Folk and Blues, Piano Ballads, Prog Rock, soul, Psychedelia etc. Wow, what a decade. And remember that all of these styles had to be invented out of some very basic musical material and technology (the multi track tape recorder didn't arrive until the middle of the 60's, let alone the synth, vocoder, the mellotron, effects pedals or overdrive. Stereo was invented then too.

While there is lots of great music now we owe almost everything to the artists of the 60's - they blazed the trails that are now our well worn paths.

I think nowadays people copy The Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys so I don't really think there is much change in music. I mean, these people are supposed to be talented, but why can't they maybe write an original song? I mean take Scritti Politti, they sound a hell of a lot like The Beach Boys! Even though they have been around for a while. But still, they should still write some better music. Hopefully it will get better in the next few years.

I think you are being a bit hard on the music today, but I hear what you are saying. The pop industry has always been driven by the marketing people. They pick their stars according to how they look rather than their talent. We were lucky in the sixties in that we had two groups (The Beatles and The Stones) with outstanding talent. They influenced everything and would still have hit the top even without excessive marketing.
Later came the manufactured groups (Monkees, Boys on the Block, Spice Girls - the list is legion) and glamorous female vocalists - emphasis on the glamour.

Yes, a lot of music is "rubbish" these days (Oh you brits and your cute little vernacularisms), and there were greats in the 60's like the Beatles and Stones. But those bands so quickly come to mind because they were so great. There was so much horrible music back then too, but we have mostly forgotten them because of how bad they were. There is some great music today too, and those will be the bands that we will remember in 40 years. I think Jeff Buckley from the 90's and Matisyahu from today will stand the test of time like the Beatles did.

cause times change and we don't live in the 60's so the music and other things today are made for the people living today. The 60's are gone, yes some people try to bring some things from the 60's back. However in reality we are living in 2006 NOT the 60's.
It's a personal choice you don't have to listen to the music if you don't like it.

I'd say it's because of a creativity slump. There's only so many ways to sing about a finite amount of subjects, i.e., love, hate, parents, dating, jail, and such.
However, even in the 60's there were some pretty lame songs by some good bands such as, "Glad" by Cream. The whole song just sucks.
A person could go through a whole slew of bands through the years and make a case of staleness from each one.
Some bands just hit their peak, and that's it; they don't plateau and have longevity like some others.

The Beatles (of blessed memory) were given 8 years to mature. These days, bands are lucky to get 8 months, before the money men throw them away.

maybe your just listening to the wrong music of today. i feel todays music is amazing. besides that the punk of the 70's and indie of the 80's is much better than the 60's to me. it is only my opinion, but i feel the 60's was an overrated musical time. all the music of the 60's seemed pretty self indulgent to me. but like i said, one mans pleasure is another mans poison!
