Why don't you just get a grant from your university for these expenses? Talk to your thesis advisor. You should not have to bear the burden of these expenses, and I am sure s/he can point you to some resources.

If you end up paying for this yourself (which you should NOT), whether these expenses are tax deductible depends on your situation. For example, if you are currently working full time as a sociologist, and you are working on a Master's degree in sociology in order to keep your job, then YES, the expense would be deductible. If you are not yet a sociologist, and are working on your Master's degree to become qualified to work as a sociologist, then NO, the expense is not deductible.

But honestly, there's no reason you should be paying for this in the first place.
