Dell is the worst when it comes to return stats and customer satifaction, dispite all the hype around it as "America's favorite". Gateway is actually the best with customer satisfaction. If you want a good price and a good laptop, go with ACER. If you want a bad price and a supreme laptop, go with apple. If you want a bad price and an excellent laptop, go with HP or Toshiba. If you want a average price with a average laptop, go with VAIO (it looks good too).
Personally, I bought a Toshiba SK9. 1800 for the sexiest beast you'll ever see. The reason I chose this one is not because of the price, and not just because it's a overall good laptop, but because I can upgrade its ram to 4G.
See, computers don't get slower in 3 years. You THINK they get slower because you use other, faster computers. Want a good investment? Look for a laptop with a fast enough processor to install vista, with 3+ USB, and with an upgradable RAM.
Good luck finding your laptop. Because I'm in love with mine :)

Apple.
Dell Sucks, the graphics are lousy. They are meant for stiffs in Grey offices. They lack all the fundamentals that a computer needs.

Apple on the other hand;

has no 114,000 viruses
does not freeze up
is incredibly reliable
fast
good graphics
built in camera
performance is unbelievable fast
easy to use.

Now lets look at windows. The reason why they are so cheap is because the company gets all the money from you by the viruses you willl get and the lousy virus defense systems you will need to try to stop your computer from getting any more viruses. Dell rakes your money by the virus matinence.

Get apple.

I would say Acer is. They have good products for low prices. I used one of their TravelMate Series laptops for 6 years without replacing anything. I now own a new Aspire 3620 series system. They are reliable and don't tend to overheat like dell does. I got mine for under 500 without taxes with these specs: 1.6Gigahertz CleronM, 512MB DDR2 memory, 40GB hard drive, 128MB Intel Graphics, Integrated Wireless and bluetooth, and a DVD/CD-RW combo drive.

Chekout the model comparison on Dell's website or use their online notebook configuration utility.

You can't go wrong with Dell.

Dell would be the best ones because they're fast and affordable and include many extras.

Dell.................ABSOLUTELY!!!!
You can trust me on that. It has great prices and extremely great performance guaranteed.
P.S. Mac is the worst you can get....its slow and has no right click!
HP would be my second choice.
Happy Shopping!
