it's a cartilage piercing and the skin around it is dried out. So it starts to get itchy and red.

If it is really red and puffy go to the doctor. If it is just a little irriated wash it well and put some antibiotic ointment on it. You could call your doctor's office and speak to a nurse, or call a local phamacist. Keep a close eye on it, if it does not look better in 24 hours get to a doctor.

Use hydrogen peroxide around the piercing two times daily. Keep your hand off from the piercing don't try to move the piercing around just let it heal.
Also buy some "sea salt" you can buy it at any grocery store and its cheep. Boil some water on the stove and then add some sea salt to it. Let it cool down then use a cotton swab and apply the sea salt mixture (saline) to your ear.
If it gets too bad and don't heal then you need to remove it and let it heal then get it re-pierced.

Unlike what a lot of people are saying here, do NOT use any kind of cream. This can fester inside your piercing.

Also, do not remove the piercing. It can encourage the hole to close, and also create abcesses.

Instead, wash it off using a mild alcohol solution (a small amount of alcohol in a glass of water), then later on in the day, soak with a sea-salt solution (1/4 teaspoon in a glass of water).

If it's "dried out" do not use peroxide or any type of salt, it will dry it out more. Use neosporan and if that doesn't work you need to take out the earing, you may be allergic to the metal. Buy a solid gold or silver stud or ring and see if that helps.

Take out the piercing and soak the ear in sea salt.

leave the piercing in and do warm salt soaks. you can either dunk your ear in a mug of the water, or saturate cotton balls and hold them on each side of the piercing.

very little salt should be in the water.

for more info, go to www.bmezine.com and check their qod.

I would use a moisturizing soap like provon or satin to help with infection. Clean twice per day. Sea salt soaks help with healing. I use emu oil to help my earlobes stay moisturized and healthy.

My piercer always said never to remove an infected piercing because it would heal over and you may get an infected abscess. I found dabbing it with hydrogen peroxide twice daily helped it heal up quickly.
