I'm looking for a budget laptop to be used for schoolwork, internet, games, watching TV and DVDs and burning CDs/DVDs. Preferably <£750 - can anyone reccommend a particular model? Or indeed anything to avoid?? UK please

Dell laptops are ok however having worked with a lot of them, they do have a tendency towards the keyboard/touchpad going wrong due to overheating or heavy leaning on the front part of the chassis. That said they are still pretty good laptops.

Compaq are very good, the Presario range (i have an EA4110) are good value for money and very reliable. Toshiba also make very reliable ones.

You might also try MESH, they make superb PCs but i have never tried their laptops but this one:

For under £750 quid you are not going to get an uber gaming laptop but you will get something that suits your needs. If you want one that is going to cope with modern 3D games you are going to need to invest in one with a proper graphics card though,

Wario1998 is right. Dell provide a very good budget Laptop with a three year warranty. You can't go wrong. As to Mac's, their are 7000 applications + designed for Windows and less then a thousand for Mac's. Mac's are great for graphic software if that's what you need. Stick to Windows, it may be the worlds most hated company but everyone uses it.

The new apple macbook is good and costs £749 but as its the bottom of the range model it doesnt have a dvd burner! If you want windows then I would say go with Compaq presario models.

Don't want much, do you???

Check out www.computeractive.co.uk and www.pcpro.co.uk

though i'd suggest trying either a second hand computer/laptop shop or somewhere like DELL, Mesh or one of the other places that sell bundles...

I would go with a DELL. I own 3 dell laptops and they are great.

Make sure to get a quality processor. NO CELERON.
NO MACs

With the latest DUO chip that came out you are sure to get a very good laptop anyway you go. BUt for bang for the buck I would go dell.

avoid shared DDR ram or memory it slows the processes down.Dell makes great laptops and you can customize them as you choose. Good luck buddy. IF you want to play games you'll want tons of memory and a good graphics card.

I bought a Hewlett Packard NX6125. Turion 1.6Ghz 64 bit. Wireless.
DVD burner. 60Gb harddrive, 0.5Gb DDR RAM. Windows XP pro.
Never fallen over. Cost just on £600
Get this. My better half spilled paint remover on the keyboard - paint remover !!!! - wiped it all off and it still works fine.
I'd recommend them to anyone.
