There was a time when Whites sat in the front of the bus and everyone else sat in the back. If you were a minority, you paid your fare at the front door ,got off, and got on at the back door.
One evening a woman named Rosa Parks was going home and refused to give up her seat to a White man. She was arrested and booked. She also happened to be a secretary for the NAACP.
A protest was organized to voice the disapproval of the bus line's policy towards seating. arrangementsnot only for Blacks but all minorities. For more than a year,no Blacks rode the bus and hurt the bus lines in the wallet.
This led Presidet John F. Kennedy to change the laws concerning admission and seating on buses, trains, restaurants, theatres and anywhere the general public assembles for entertainment or conveyance.

it began in 1955- I believe encouraged by M.L.king who was outraged over the Rosa Parks incident. Since the majority of commuters were Black, the city suffered greatly because of the refusal of most to ride the buses. They either carpooled or walked long distances to work. This led to a law which allowed Black and Whites equal rights on buses.
