Hey I really really want to learn how to cheerlead. Im 12 yrs old...turning 13 in April. I want to cheerlead beacuse it seems like a fun sport NOT beacuse I want to be popular or anything. My parents think that a couple fo girls in short skirts waving pom poms and cheering after some football players is a bad influence and NOT a sport. I really want to try it but THEY WONT LET ME!!! Please help me i needa know a way to persuade them!!!!

I think they have a misperception of cheerleading. It is truly a sport these days. In fact some people are concerned that it has become so advanced that girls are getting unnecessarily injured.

Find out from the girls that have been doing it if they have been in any competitons and won any awards. I am sure there is something like that. Bring it up with your folks that being a cheerleader these days is not just pom poms it is like a sport and they do some pretty difficult competions--it is really like gymnastics. Tell them about what your local group has done.

I checked the web. And you might wish to check it further for some things to show them. Put in key words "Cheerleader competition". There are several sites--and Youtube videos you could show them. Check them out yourself first and see what you think would most impress them.

I suspect they think cheerleading will loosen your morals. This is a popular misconception among some people. Find out if any of the cheerleaders you know are active in their church or something like that and tell them.

Tell them that you like dance and sports and this is the perfect combination. Tell them what a good job raising you they have done--and this is not going to change anything. It will just give you the opportunity to be athletic, enjoy dance and gymanstics, and meet and work with some other girls.

I think its wonderful that you would want to become a cheerleader. Talk with your parents ask them to go to a football game so that they can see for themselves what cheerleaders do its not about short skirts and waving pom poms. Its about team spirit and being involved in your school. it builds character and is a good thing. I cant wait until my daughter is old enough to try out. Id be the first one to cheer for her. Good luck...

You need to talk to them... tell them that its good to have a hobbie, or enjoy a sport, especially a sport that can keep you fit... Ask them if they prefer you being obese? I'm sure they wouldn't want that for their child! I think you just need to be opened about it, and explain all the advantages like weight, and something you love to do. I think everyone is an individual and shouldn't be judged by the sport... Its all in the person, they don't necessarly have to be chearleaders to be a bad influence, maybe you can explain that to your parents... that anyone or anything can be a bad influence... If it was such a bad thing, they wouldn't have it at the schools for all ages.

You have to prove to them your dedication to the sport. Since it is the beginning of the year, there are different competitions that you could probably get them to go and see, such as region or state competitions. The games are only practice for regionals and state. Cheerleading does cost a lot of money, so if you are able to get them to let you do it you have to tell them and actually do the fundraisers so that they do not have very much money coming out of their pockets.

In this day and age, I can almost undestand your parents concern. However, I can def see your point. See if you can get a schedue of of the dates and times, and get THEM to be a part of your expereince. Even bargaint o have your skirt a little longer if neccesary. See if your cheerleading coach could even talk with your mom one day. Dunno, thast a rough one!

Just tell them that you won't let it affect your grades, and you won't let it become a bad influence. Tell them how important it is to you..
