TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) is great for wall washing, we use it all the time in Building restoration work. Any hardware, paint store will carry this product. Follow the mixing directions and rubber gloves are recommended

Be careful mixing. I used vinegar and water and it worked pretty well. The vinegar smell goes away quickly. Baking soda will leave a residue. 409 actually works pretty well. Especially for greasy kitchen walls.

Parky is right. TSP (or TSP substitute) is a GREAT cleaner to use before you paint. It removes grease faster and easier than anything else I've used. Wear gloves, and be careful, though. It's very irritating to skin.
