For a star, as others have said, you need to use the asterix. The code for the asterix is
\&\#42;
I had to include the \'s due to writing it normally would just display a star and not the code. Remove these \'s before writing into the html page.
You can see other codes from the source, you have to look down the page a bit to see the table of codes.
